Ym mis Awst 1990, es i mas i bysgio gitar ar dop tref Aberystwyth am y tro cyntaf. Yn ystod tymor yr Hydref 1990, bues i'n mynd a'r gitar mewn i'r ysgol, a rhoi perfformiadau ad hoc o ganeuon Dafydd Iwan mewn ambell i ddosbarth. Ces i gwahoddiad gan athrawes i berffomio mewn gwylnos CND Aberystwyth yn erbyn Rhyfel y Gwlff 1990-91. Yno, cwrddais ayr ymgyrchydd iaith, Mair Tomos Ifans, ac o fan 'ni y drefnwyd fy 'gig' cyntaf go-iawn (gweler y poster), sef noson o ganu'r clasuron ysgafn Cymraeg yn Nhafarn y Cwps Aberystwyth, ym mis Ebrill 1991, ar gyfer Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg.

Yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 1991, es i gysylltiad gyda mwy o bobl Cymdeithas yr Iaith, gan gynnwys Huw Gwyn o'r grwp Neu Unrhyw Declyn Arall. Fe'm gwahoddwyd i ddod ar daith haf Cymdeithas yr Iaith a bod yn rhyw fath o "support" ysgafn i grwp roc "Aros Mae" mewn cyfres o gigs o Gaernarfon i Gaerdydd ym mis Awst.

Yno, ar Ddydd Sadwrn gwlyb Fedi 28 1991, cymrodd fy mywyd tro annisgwyl. Roeddwn wedio bod yn y Vetch, Abertawe i weld gem ddiflas iawn rhwng Abertawe a Peterborough United. Ar ol gyrraedd adref, es i lan i'm stafell wely, a dyna lle 'roedd telyn pen-glin newydd sbon yn fy aros - sef anrheg gan Mam a Dad. Yn naturiol, roeddwn i fyny nes yr oriau man yn dysgu fy alawon cyntaf. Hynny yw - yr alawon araf 'roeddwn eisoes yn gwybod ar fy nhof o wrando ar gerddoriaeth Ar Log: "Y ferch o blwy' Penderyn", "Ymdaith Hirwaun", "Y Deryn Pur", ag ati. Yn ystod Hydref 1991, ces i ambell i gig fel "support" yn canu caneuon ar y gitar acwstig cyn perfformiadau ym Mhenweddig gan Tips Wyn Gruffydd, (sef grwp roc ifanc o Aberystwyth a fu'n rhan o sin roc fywiog oedd yn cynnwys DOM a Jess ar y pryd)

In August 1990, I went busking for the first time at the "top of town" in Aberystwyth. During the Autumn term at school, I took my guitar into school and gave ad hoc performances of Dafydd Iwan songs. I was then invited by a teacher to bring my guitar to a CND peace vigil against the 1990-91 Gulf War, in Aberystwyth.

At the vigil, I met the storyteller and Welsh language rights campaigner, Mair Tomos Ifans, and from there we organised a joint gig, at the Coopers' Arms, Aberystwyth (see poster) - a night of singing some of the old Welsh folk and political favourites, to raise funds for Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg - the Welsh Language Society.

At the 1991 National Eisteddfod, I met some more people from "Cymdeithas", and was invited on their Summer Tour as a rather incongurous acoustic support act for the emerging rock group, "Aros Mae". However, I managed to fluke a great ovation at Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff - and the performing bug stuck with me!

On Saturday September 28th, 1991, my life changed. I had just returned from a wet and miserable day at the Vetch Field watching a terrible match between Swansea City and Peterborough United. On my return home to Aberystwyth, waiting for me in my bedroom was a brand new Celtic knee harp - a present from Mam and Dad. Needless to say, I was up till the early hours practicing my first tunes - namely the slower tunes from the repertoire of Ar Log that I already knew by heart from accompanying their cassettes with my little guitar. During Autumn 1991, I somehow made the bill in Penweddig school gigs, as a support act for Tips Wyn Gruffydd, a promising young band who were part of a lively rock scene in Ceredigion at the time) A new life had begun...
